Skiing the Catskills From Manhattan Without a Car Starts With a Decision You Make in October

The first cold snap arrives and every group chat in New York asks the same question: who has a car? Nobody has a car. Then somebody floats a rental, discovers Friday night on the Palisades and the price of a

Mount Tammany is 1,527 feet tall. That sounds modest until you are on the Red Dot Trail, gaining about 1,200 of those feet in a mile and a quarter of rock steps. At the top the Delaware Water Gap opens up below you, the river bending south through the notch. Autumn is when that view pays the most. It is also when the lot at Dunnfield Creek fills before 8 a.m., and the shoulder of I-80 turns into a line of parked cars. Our coach leaves Manhattan and drops you at the trailhead instead. Quick Summary: Key Takeaways The climb: about 1,200 feet of gain in 1.2 miles on the Red Dot Trail, then an easier Blue Dot descent for a 3.5-mile loop. Peak color: mid-to-late October is the usual window in the Delaware Water Gap, with the ridge turning before the valley floor. Parking is the problem: the Dunnfield Creek lot off I-80 Exit 1 fills before 8am on fall weekends. The day trip runs $49: the Mount Tammany trip pairs the hike with a smokehouse barbecue stop on the way back. Groups can go private: a charter coach works for hiking clubs, offices, and family groups who want their own departure time. Mount Tammany packs real climbing into a 3.5-mile loop This is a short hike that hikes hard. The Red Dot Trail gains about 1,200 feet in roughly 1.2 miles, mostly over uneven rock, and the last third is closer to a scramble than a walk. Come down the Blue Dot. It is gentler; it drops you along Dunnfield Creek, and taking the loop in that direction means you climb the hard part fresh instead of picking your way down it on tired legs three hours later. Budget three to four hours of moving time. Add a half hour at the summit, because nobody leaves that view quickly. → the Mount Tammany bus trip from Manhattan Foliage in the Delaware Water Gap peaks mid-to-late October The ridge turns before the river. Color usually reaches the top of Tammany in the second week of October, then works down toward the valley floor over the following ten days. The Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area draws more than 4 million visits a year, according to the National Park Service, and a healthy share of those arrive in October. Plan around the crowd rather than hoping it stays home. Early October still delivers. Late October can be better, with thinner crowds, colder air, and long light on the rock. → check the current trip schedule The parking lot is the real reason to take the bus Dunnfield Creek has a small lot. On an October Saturday, it is full before 8am, and the overflow parks along the ramp at I-80 Exit 1 in a way that makes rangers unhappy and drivers late. A coach skips that entirely. You board in Manhattan, eat a bagel for ninety minutes, and step off at the trailhead with your boots already laced. The ride home is the other half of it. After 1,200 feet of climbing, sitting in a climate-controlled seat while somebody else handles the westbound merge onto I-80 is worth more than most people expect it to be. → private charter buses for group hikes Dress for a ridge, not for the city The summit runs 10 to 15 degrees colder than Manhattan, and wind on exposed rock does the rest. Layers, a wind shell, and gloves once you get into late October. Footwear decides the day. The Red Dot is loose rock and roots for most of its length, and sneakers with worn tread turn a fun scramble into the kind of slow, careful descent that nobody enjoys and everybody remembers. Bring two liters of water. No tap up there. → trip questions and gear answers Autumn has more than one day trip out of the city Tammany is the headline, not the only option. Resorts World Catskills and Wind Creek both run as $49 day trips through the fall, which suits people who want the drive through the mountains without the 1,200-foot climb attached to it. Groups get more freedom. A private charter lets a hiking club, an office or an extended family set the departure time, the pickup point, and the return, anywhere within about 300 miles of New York City. Ski season follows fast. Belleayre, Hunter, and Windham dates start moving in November. → browse all trips leaving New York City Thirty years of running buses out of Manhattan shows up in the logistics We have been doing this since the early 1990s, and the boring parts are where the experience shows. Departures leave on time, dispatch answers the phone from 9am to 9pm daily, and the exact pickup spot arrives in your confirmation email so nobody is wandering around Union Square at 6:45am. Cancellations are simple. Full refund up to 24 hours out, plus weather reschedules or credits when a ridge is iced over. That policy exists because we would rather move your date than watch you hike something unsafe. Frequently Asked Questions Q: How hard is the Mount Tammany hike? A: Strenuous but short. The Red Dot Trail climbs roughly 1,200 feet in 1.2 miles over rock, with a scramble near the top. Most reasonably fit hikers finish the 3.5-mile loop in three to four hours. Trail shoes or boots matter more than fitness here. Q: When is peak fall foliage at the Delaware Water Gap? A: Usually mid-to-late October. The ridge tops turn around the second week, then color moves down toward the river over the next ten days or so. A warm, wet September tends to push the whole thing later. Q: Is there a bus from NYC to Mount Tammany? A: Yes. Our Mount Tammany day trip departs from a Manhattan pickup point, runs about ninety minutes each way, and includes a smokehouse barbecue stop. The exact pickup location comes in your confirmation email a few days before the trip. Q: How early should I book a fall hiking trip from New York City? A: October Saturdays are the first to sell, so two to four weeks out is smart, and earlier if you need seats together. Private charters for clubs or offices need more lead time, especially on peak-foliage weekends. Grab a seat before the October dates close Check the schedule, pick a Saturday, and let the coach handle I-80. Hiking clubs and offices can charter their own bus and set the departure time.
